Leap Frog

Very often when an idea comes to me for a new sculpture, I will develop a 3-D thumbnail in sculpting wax. Wax is strong enough to support itself and needs no armature. This thumbnail allows me to adjust the composition and balance, in an extremely preliminary stage. When I’m happy that it will work and the effort worthwhile, I then build a scaled replica in clay on an armature, where more detail can be developed. This then is the Maquette from which I will enlarge to finished size—in this case the boy will be life-size and his playmate will enlarge in proportion. The finished bronze will soon enhance someone’s garden!
